I’m soon going to be putting together my travel bucket list, and one thing you can be sure will be on it is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Not that it looks like I’ll be going there anytime soon. (My own fault, if I stopped going abroad for festivals I might have the money and time off work for things like this…)
This year, Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday February 9th. In case you’re wondering, Fat Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday, named so as it is a day when people eat all they want of everything and anything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a long fasting period for Christians.
I’m excited, this will be my first Mardi Gras celebration – I’m told there will be a costume parade with Shotgun Carousel performers, bountiful drinks, Southern food and plenty of carnival spirit, as well as the expected live music from the Kansas Smitty’s House Band, specifically ‘swamp rock’ – intriguing.
I have no idea what to wear yet! It’s a bit late in the day for me to pull a great costume together, so I’m going to grab a colourful wig from Mad World, throw on some beads and hope for the best!
Fat Tuesday raises awareness for Backyard Gardeners Network, a non profit organisation based in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward neighbourhood, helping to build a stronger community through the cultural tradition of growing food.
Tickets are priced at £12, and Fat Tuesday is being held on both Friday 5th and Saturday 6th February.
