So yesterday myself and Luisa-Christie of Eat Sleep Luisa Repeat shared a lovely candlelit dinner. Naked. Now before you get too excited, we weren’t taking our friendship to the next level – we were visiting The Bunyadi, London’s first naked restaurant, on it’s trial run.

Don’t expect this post to have many pictures because we weren’t allowed to take photos into the dining area, for obvious reasons.

So, what is The Bunyadi? And, well, why?

Pronounced bon-ya-dee, bunyadi is apparantly a Hindi word meaning fundamental, base, natural. Although I could only find an Urdu translation, giving it the meaning substantive. Both however, seem to get to the point that The Bunyadi are trying to make.

The Bunyadi is the new creation from Seb Lyall of Lollipop – the man who brought London the Breaking Bad bar, ABQ (you can read my reviews of ABQ here and here).

After serving over 65,000 Breaking Bad fans self mixed molecular drinks in the cult yellow trailer of ABQ, Lollipop have gone for something completely different this time – taking diners to “a beginning where everything was fresh, free and unadulterated from the trappings of modern life”.

The intention was to really go back to basics – guests are enveloped in The Bunyadi’s immersive Pangea-like world, free from technology (yep, that means no phones!), electric lights and even clothing.

The ingredients for the set five course meal are natural and home grown, and the wood-flame grilled meals are served on handmade clay crockery with edible cutlery. The only light in the dining area comes from candles, and the furniture is just tree stumps.

The Venue

Now, I’m not allowed to tell you exactly where The Bunyadi is. The official reason being they want to keep it a secret and don’t want others to get involved. To the outside world it’s just a cocktail bar.

But I can’t help thinking it might have something to do with the hate mail Seb has received as a result of this new project (yep, HATE MAIL, and threats, from haters of nudity across the world). The Bunyadi has been covered by press in over 110 countries – and not all of them are as open minded as us Brits.

So I’m just going to tell you it’s an inconspicuous (to the point it is kind of obvious something’s going on, if you get what I mean), blacked out bar somewhere South of the river.

The venue is designed to be split into two sections (“pure” and “clothed”), and has a capacity of 42.

The Experience

Once you’ve made it past the bouncers at the door, you step into a dark bar area – so dark that it takes a while for your eyes to adjust to the soft lighting. When they do, you feel as though you’ve stepped into some kind of secret, exclusive spa – guests around you are dressed in white towelling robes, sipping on cocktails and sitting on tree stumps.

This is the ”non naked area” – where you wait to get changed before the experience, or come after for some drinks while still gowned.

The bar is the focal point of the room (I imagine it’s a permanent fixture in the venue as it doesn’t quite fit the aesthetic). We were a little early so we grabbed a couple of cocktails. They were great, really fresh. and our bartender was fantastic – so friendly and happy to substitute vodka for gin in my chosen cocktail.

While we sipped on our drinks, we read through a list of rules we were handed on entry. There are lots of rules.

When one of the changing rooms became free, we were led down the ‘path to purity’ (an unlit corridor) into a very small room with some lockers and a curtain for privacy. Inside each locker was a towelling robe and some slippers (which you can keep). You leave EVERYTHING in your locker – when you leave the changing room it’s just you, your robe, slippers and a key.

So we got into our robes and returned to the bar area until it was time to dine.

Once again walking down the path to purity, we were greeted by a very attractive, very pert, almost naked waitress. By almost naked I mean she wore a flesh coloured thong with some leaves decorating it.

I was taken by surprise – when I’d read that clothing was optional and diners could remain in their robes, I had expected the servers to. But nope, we were treated to lots of lovely boobs. I mean there were male servers there too, but meh, boobs.

And while I’m talking about boobs, maybe this is the time to emphsasise the point that The Bunyadi is not a sexual experience. Remember rule number one – No indecency or nuisance or any sexual activity of any kind is allowed.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the female form. Anyway…

The dining area, which is the ”naked and pure” area was a lot more private and a lot less intimidating than I had expected. Each dining table is hidden behind bamboo partitions – you can have a little peek through and make out what’s going on around you if you like, but in our little kind of cubicles, with the soft candlelight, I actually felt quite comfortable. Not what I’d been expecting at all.

In my head, a load of naked diners were sitting at tables in one big room. Just like a regular restaurant but no clothes. The reality was actually rather pleasant.

It was starting to feel like a spa. Or a sauna. It really was overly warm in there.

The tree stump furniture wasn’t comfortable. And I’m glad I had that robe because, y’know, splinters. Which would have been very bad.

We were served five courses (naked vegan or naked non-vegan) over around 90 minutes. It was perfectly timed – leisurely but not slow. Service was fantastic (as well as easy on the eye) – our waitress was lovely, knowledgeable about the food and the experience, and seemed to really enjoy telling us about the inspiration behind each dish.

The Food

Although the food claims to be cooked on a wood fire, I’m pretty sure everything I ate was raw. But that was okay because it was all surprisingly delicious.

You have a choice of naked vegan or naked non-vegan menus. Although only courses two and three actually differ.

I went for the naked non-vegan. Luisa, of course went for the naked vegan and you’ll be able to read about that on her blog very soon.

I’m a recent convert to raw food (after the lovely afternoon tea I had at RAW La Suite West) and I really enjoyed the food at The Bunyadi. I had been concerned that the food may be sub-par, with the emphasis on the experience as a whole, but this is not food to turn your nose up at.

It was all really fresh, well thought out and beautifully presented. These were quality ingredients and exciting combinations. Edible flowers made an appearance on several occasions.

The highlights for me were the coriander steak tartare main with goji berries and basil and nettle oil, and the dessert of chia mousse with blackberries and raw crumble. If it were a regular restaurant I would return and order these. Probably a few times.

And the raw veg first course, with it’s serpent like spice filled skewer of cucumber and a dressing which was a kind of appley, cucumbery soup, was surprisingly enjoyable. This one was inspired by the Garden of Eden, and I couldn’t help but smile at the enthusiasm our waitress showed when telling us all about it.

The Drinks

The bar in the non naked area served a variety of classic cocktails, wines, lagers etc, as well as some signature cocktails which perfectly fit with the theme. I went for the Jal with watermelon, berries and agave, substituting vodka for gin. It was a good cocktail, worth the £9.50 price tag.

Now one thing that was a slight annoyance – in the dining area you could only order wine (by a half or whole bottle), or drink the rather lovely cucumber water from the pitcher on the table. If you want a cocktail or other drink you have to get it in the bar area, and take it through, decanted into a ceramic cup as your glass isn’t allowed in. You can’t order more once you’re in there.

What did I think?

Well, as a blogger, I’m one of the worst culprits for photographing everything I do, tweeting during dinner… you get the picture. Without access to our phones, Luisa and I actually focused on each other, which was actually quite lovely.

I really enjoyed the food and the experience – I had been sceptical beforehand. It isn’t something I’d do again, but that isn’t criticism and the intention of The Bunyadi isn’t for it to be a regular evening out.

As a one off experience I would recommend it. If it’s within your budget. Once you’ve paid for the meal and a couple of drinks you’re looking at around £100 per head.

So how do I get to go?

The Bunyadi will be open from this Saturday for around three months. It’s priced at £68.99 which includes the 5 course meal, a robe and slippers (although if you visited ABQ you can purchase tickets at a reduced price of £49).

You’re going to start seeing a lot of afternoon tea on the blog – I’ll tell you about my current project in detail soon –  and I’m going to kick it off with one that’s a little bit out of character for me – the guilt free vegan afternoon tea at RAW in Bayswater.

Don’t be put off by the name, or selling point, of the afternoon tea at RAW – it may be guilt free and vegan but it’s delicious and satisfying nonetheless.

Located inside boutique hotel La Suite West (just over the road from Bayswater tube station) visitors are greeted at the front desk with a complimentary smoothie of the day – on the day I went it was pear, apple and lemon, and was lovely. Service excels from the moment you walk in.

You can choose whether to take your tea inside the restaurant or outside on the terrace. Despite its location, the outside seating area is peaceful and relaxing, as it faces onto an attractive residential area rather than the main road.

The afternoon tea itself is priced at £27 per person. For that you get a glass of non -alcoholic fizz (RAW doesn’t serve alcohol) which I thought tasted a bit like apple juice, and as much loose leaf tea (in varying flavours) and coffee as you like, as well as, of course, the nibbles. Oh and the yummy smoothies!

The selection of finger sandwiches have interesting fillings; my favourites were avocado chilli mousse with rocket and roast tomato with sunflower seed pesto.

Of the canapes, the hummus on gluten free bread were surprisingly moreish with a nice bite to them.

And I would never have guessed that the cheese in the filo pastry bites with asparagus was actually made of almonds!

It was unanimously agreed amongst my group that the highlight were the scones – homemade and served with strawberries and whipped coconut ‘cream’, they were light and not too filling.

The desserts were also surprisingly good – the sticky toffee and chocolate fudge cake bites were decadent and as good as any dairy version I can think of.

And the mini squares of lemon cake topped with cacao cream, coconut and pomegranate… I’m convinced the cacao cream was Nutella!

For an unhealthy eating, heavy meat eater, I was really surprised how impressed I was by RAW. They certainly challenged the misconception that vegan food has to be boring! I will definitely be going back for dinner sometime.

I know, I know, my ‘weekly’ round up posts aren’t really happening weekly, but life gets in the way sometimes! It’s been a busy couple of weeks – not only have I had loads on, but I managed to fracture my shoulder, wrist and break my thumb (which is why you’ll see some rather attractive wrist supports in my pics for a while!).

Sadly my injuries happened on the day I was meant to attend #BLOGGERSBELOWZERO at the Ice Bar, which I had been looking forward to for ages! Ice Bar have been very kind though and have invited me to my own little review visit so I will be posting about it soon! Abhorrent Decimation at Scream Lounge

I left the People Footwear event a little early to get myself down to the tiny Scream Lounge in Croydon to see local death metal band Abhorrent Decimation. Loved them. Properly loved them.

Despite being exactly the kind of thing I usually love, Abhorrent Decimation had managed to pass me by up until now. But I was so impressed, and I left with a copy of their new album, Miasmic Mutation. If you like death metal with a modern edge give it a listen, it’s awesome.

Wednesday evening was my second visit to the ABQ London Breaking Bad themed bar (after going the first time around in the Summer, which you can read about here). After such a successful run of their Hackney pop up RV, they returned to a new venue, and a new BYOB format, which I’ve posted about in detail here!

Chicken Night with Yelp & Neighbourhood

I’ve really been getting into Yelp lately (you can check out my profile here if you’re interested, feel free to add me as a friend if you’re a fellow Yelper).  I’m actually pretty disappointed that I didn’t get involved sooner, since they have such a great community and hold some really awesome events!

Wednesday just gone I attended their Newbie and Chicken Night at Neighbourhood in Stratford. It was a great night, I met some cool new people and had a delicious family style dinner and as much beer as I could drink! Thanks Yelp!

At Home With The Chef with Yelp & Eat With

Another night, another Yelp event! This was actually a pretty special one, there were only eight spaces available so Yelp ran a little competition – the eight Yelpers who recruited the most new members won a space. And I actually won overall, and got an extra little gift of a really nice cafetiere and coffee – I’m keeping it for my new desk when I start my new job in March.

Now, this event run with Eat With is worthy of a post all of its own, so you can read about it soon!

Fat Tuesday – London Mardi Gras 2016

You may have seen my post about Fat Tuesday in advance of the event? Regardless, I was invited down by Kansas Smittys and Shotgun Carousel to their London Mardi Gras event on Southbank. Despite the miserable weather, it was a great night!

Last night I popped along to The Hoxton Gallery for the UK launch event of People Footwear. Their Spring/Summer 2016 line will be their first collection available within the UK – the products are due to be rolled out online and across select retailers next month.

As you may have gathered, this month I’m participating in Veganuary, so a launch event for a Vegan footwear line which promised Vegan food and beer was pretty perfect!

The Shoes

Obviously I’ll start with the shoes. People Footwear originated in Vancouver with the intention to produce ‘the next generation of classic casual footwear’. Not only are their products Vegan and their manufacturing cruelty-free, but they have even been recognised by PETA!

Let’s face it, it’s pretty obvious by now that I’m quite partial to a bit of leather in my wardrobe, and that extends to pretty much all my footwear. Even my favourite Vans are mock croc leather, although I do have some canvas Star Wars and Disney ones. So I was maybe a little unsure as to how I’d feel about a Vegan footwear line. I mean, when you say Vegan footwear, Crocs are what springs to mind, haha!

But I was pleasantly surprised. The designs were, for the most part, pretty simple. But what makes People Footwear stand out from the numerous other companies offering similar silhouettes are the fabrics. These are clearly synthetic, innovative, high tech materials. Shiny canvas style finishes, printed polyester, super breathable polyester knits (trademarked as ‘DreamKnit’) and in a wide range of colours and prints. Very sports luxe.

And I didn’t expect them to be so light! All People Footwear products have soles made using ‘SkyLite’, Peoples trademarked rubberized foam, which apparently ‘provides the optimal balance of support, cushion, and lightweight performance’.

People Footwear like their fancy trademarked words for their materials and manufacturing techniques, as you may already have noticed! As well as the previously mentioned DreamKnit and SkyLite, they use ‘Supercrush’ shock absorbing sock liners and ‘Ezy-Brzy’ construction which combines 3D printing with mesh fabric. Ever since I went to the Wonderluk 3D printed jewellery launch, I’ve been meaning to look more into 3D printing in fashion, so the Ezy-Brzy intrigued me.

With their futuristic fabrics and finishes, and lightweight construction, the shoes are very on trend, and I imagine they’d be a dream to wear in Summer! I quite fancy a pair of the block coloured pastel Stanley Knits for everyday wear.

The Food

So this is awkward. The invitation promised food from Vegan Hippo, which I was quite excited about, as they were on my list of places to try for Veganuary. But Vegan Hippo apparantly didn’t show up, leaving People Footwear without catering. Not very impressive and puts me off visiting their restaurant if I’m honest.

I didn’t hang around too long, as I had a gig to go to as well that night, but I’m told by Luisa, who also attended and whose post about the event you can read here that People placed a massive Dominos Pizza order for everyone!

The Drinks

Drinks were kindly provided by Northern Monk Brew Co (and they were Vegan!). I tried the Eternal Session IPA, a strong, hoppy tasting blonde ale with a citrus tang. I think it may be an acquired taste, but I liked it. And if that wasn’t your thing, you could go for cans of gin instead, which is always a winner!

Last time I was in California, in October, I meant to visit the (now closed) Donut Bar in Orange County, because I’d heard great things, but didn’t get round to it. I hadn’t realised there was another (the original) Donut Bar in San Diego so was crazy happy when my friends took me there for breakfast donuts!

Donut Bar has a menu which changes daily, and is written on a chalkboard at the shopfront (it’s also uploaded daily onto their Facebook page).

They do sell out though, and queues can be long, so it’s best to get there early! Luckily it wasn’t too busy for us on a Friday morning, but I am told it gets pretty bad! You can place a order here to pickup the next day though.

On the day I visited the menu was quite varied, featuring everything from a basic $1 ring donut to a $5 Monte Cristo (if you don’t know what a Monte Cristo is, it’s a deep fried ham and cheese sandwich – now imagine that in donut form…).

I was surprised at how Vegan friendly Donut Bar was – they had four Vegan options which were clearly marked. There was a basic ring, a creme brulee, an apple fritter, and the one I went for – the Strawberry Split. At $4 this spectacular donut, I’m told, is one of the ones that put Donut Bar on the map. Seriously, look at it. It’s ginormous, and delicious, and I would never have guessed it was Vegan. I’m trying to find out what the cream substitute is but so far I’ve not had any luck.

Another donut, I just have to mention is the Big Poppa Tart Donut. Costing $4, the Big Poppa Tart weighs in at a huge 1lb, and has a whole pop tart in the centre. On the day I visited three flavours were available – S’Mores, Strawberry and Blueberry. Try this one heated up…

Next time I want to try the Jim Beam Maple Bourbon…

Donut Bar also have an outlet in San Diego airport Terminal 2, and I may have had a takeaway box for the plane…

Donut Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Is it kind of funny that I’m writing this the day after a post which had raw meat as its featured image? In case you hadn’t guessed, I’m quite a meat eater. My idea of a perfect meal is a bloody blue steak or a perfectly pink in the middle burger.

So, as the reactions of friends who I’ve so far told about my new venture have reinforced, I’m pretty much the last person you’d expect to cut meat out of their diet. And not only am I cutting out meat, but also dairy, eggs and other animal products. Yep, you read that right, I’m going Vegan.

At least for January. I’m taking on the personal challenge of participating in Veganuary.

I first came across Veganuary back in October when I attended Vegfest London with Luisa of Eat Sleep Luisa Repeat (she actually wrote an awesome blog post on the event here which is well worth a read) where I spoke to the founders, signed up and was given a cute wristband.

So what exactly is Veganuary?

Launched last January (2014), Veganuary is a non-profit global campaign with the goal to change public attitudes toward veganism by encouraging people to try Vegan for the month of January, while providing support to those transitioning to a plant based diet.

January was chosen as it’s generally seen as a time for resolutions and new beginnings. And I suspect it must have been a little factor that the portmanteau doesn’t work as well for any other month!

Why am I doing it?

I’ll be honest – it isn’t about the animals for me (not that I don’t love animals, I mean, who doesn’t?). A lot of people are doing the Dryathlon this month, I did contemplate that, but realistically Veganuary is more of a challenge for me. And I like a challenge.

My current diet consists heavily of meat, alcohol and junk food. I eat out or get takeaways constantly and rarely think about the impact what I put in my mouth will have on my health. I’m not saying that meat and animal products are unhealthy, and it isn’t my intention to cut them out long term (but who knows, by the end of January that might change!) but I think that participating in Veganuary will help change my attitude toward food, and have a knock on effect on my health.

I’ve always considered a dish without meat to be a side dish – I want to change that attitude, and also to eat more fruit, vegetables, grains etc as my diet is seriously lacking in them. I may also actually give cooking a go! Although I doubt you’ll see any recipe posts or cooking tips from me anytime soon!

And maybe, just maybe, I might lose a few of the lb I’ve piled on lately, haha!

What will be my main struggles?

Without a doubt, my upcoming long weekend in San Diego will be the most difficult few days. Not only am I going to the USA where I usually love to indulge in all the super sized unhealthy foods they do so well, but I won’t have cooking facilities and have less of an idea as to what my options eating out will be. I also have several hours between flights early morning at JFK Airport. For medical reasons I won’t be able to not eat a meal during that period and don’t know what will be open.

I have prepared myself for slip ups, whether intentional or not, while I’m over there. If that happens I will at least be eating a vegetarian diet for those four days, and will extend Veganuary by a further week at the beginning of February to compensate. That may sound like a cop out, but I’m being realistic, and it’s better to have a plan if it happens than to just give up on the whole thing if I hit an obstacle.

Foodwise, I think that cutting out eggs will be the hardest. Not only am I a massive fan of eggs, but they’re a hidden food in so many things.

I also hate seitan and vegan cheese which I discovered at Vegfest. Oh, that reminds me, at Vegfest I did have this delicious vegan pad thai and fresh lemonade…

How will this affect Girl At The Rock Show?

It won’t really. I know my readers have come to expect a certain type of content (meat heavy!) and I have plenty purposely stored up to keep you reading!

I’m not going to go on about the benefits of veganism here because quite frankly it’d be hypocritical and I don’t know enough on the subject yet! In fact, don’t expect that kind of content on my blog – my focus in my posts about Veganuary will be my own experiences. Maybe a food diary, or some restaurant reviews, and of course a round up at the end as to how it went.

If you want to know more about Veganuary or Veganism, take a look at the Veganuary site – it’s got a ton of helpful information whether you’re an established vegan or know nothing on the subject at all (like me!).

But overall, I hope that this will help make my blog a little more well rounded and also attract some new readers!

So what did I eat on my first day as a Vegan?

I think I’ve done pretty well really. I had half a pink grapefruit for breakfast. I haven’t had grapefruit for years, it was good.

At lunchtime I went to Wagamama with a friend. Wagamama seems to be a really good choice of chain for vegans, as there are a few vegan options already but also ingredients can easily be substituted.

I went for the Yasai Yaki Soba (soba noodles with mushrooms, other vegetables, egg, peppers, beansprouts, white and spring onions. garnished with fried shallots, pickled ginger and sesame seeds) for my main course. But I asked for no egg and because the soba noodles contain egg I substituted those for udon noodles (which are my favourite anyway).

On the side I had the Wok-fried Greens (tender stem broccoli and bok choi, stir-fried in a garlic and soy sauce) which were DELICIOUS. And I tried one of the new raw juices, Blueberry Spice (blueberry, apple and carrot with a taste of ginger).

It was a good meal – tasty and satisfying.

And later I snacked on cherries and a Nakd Cashew Cookie Bar (I bought a load of Nakd bars and nibbles at Vegfest!).
